چکیده

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in patients with refractory epilepsy and may exacerbate seizures. In epileptic patients with OSA, seizures occur more frequently during sleep. Seizure frequency may be reduced by treating OSA and increase if the treatment is interrupted or neglected. It is not clear how OSA provokes seizures. Multiple seizureprovoking factors including cerebral hypoxemia, sleep deprivation and sleep fragmentation might be involved. The temporal link between OSA and seizures or interictal events might be better understood with careful analysis of video EEG (vEEG) records. Such data has never been precisely reported. We report here a direct relation between OSA and both ictal and interictal epileptic events during vEEG investigations in a patient with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and nocturnal epilepsy with tonic seizures.

Some ambiguous symptoms may delay or lead to an erroneous diagnosis. We present a case of pure sleep, generalized tonic seizures in a patient with concomitant sleep apnea syndrome. The prolonged apneic periods with tonic muscle contracture lasting minutes and occurring exclusively at night with ensuing confusional state posed diagnostic difficulties because of the negative EEG at the beginning ...

Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy Presenting as Obstructive Type Sleep Apnea

A 20-year-old man presented with sleep apnea. Polysomnography was performed and it revealed nine apneas and two hypopneas. Contrary to typical apnea, however, rhythmic epileptiform discharges appeared at bifrontal area on EEG just before the start of apnoea. Video-EEG monitoring was performed to classify these events, and to evaluate the relationship of apnoea and ictal discharge. Ictal EEG rev...

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Presenting as Non-epileptic Spells: A Unique Combination

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), an increasingly prevalent sleep disorder, has been extensively studied in both clinical and scientific settings. In most cases, the diagnosis of sleep apnea is straightforward with patients having symptoms of snoring, choking or gasping for air while asleep and witnessed apneas. However, sleep apnea is known to present in some unusual ways. We present a case of a ...

Probable causal link between epilepsy and sleep apnea: case report.

Patients with epilepsy were reported to have concomitant sleep apnea, but it has been rarely linked to the epilepsy itself. We present a case of a 28-year-old, obese man with secondary medically resistant partial complex epilepsy due to a brain trauma, with progressive snoring, and sleep agitation, apneas, and important daytime somnolence. It was noticed in the polysomnographic study that he ha...
